Our group agreed on the same question right from the beginning.
Our answers to the questions were also similar, but were not exactly the same.
Question: What drives human behavior?
Claim: People want to feel needed by others, and yearn
to have a purpose in life.
To the Tender: “While
some of us sleep, our hearts lie open, turned to the tender, dreaming up ways
to thwart the crows. Yes, a hapless jay stumbles into our lives believing it
can fly, and we — knowing what we know — do what we can to make it so.” (Tracy
20-24) This is a concrete textual clue in the poem To the Tender, and it supports our claim. We feel that this
part of the poem solidified the aspect that the young child wanted to help the
bird, for he felt the need to, and this became his purpose in this part of his
life.
The Orchard: I have
dreamed of accomplishment. I
have fed Ambition. I have traded Nights of sleep For a
length of work. (Oliver 1-7). This specific quote from The Orchard,
shows that the narrator wanted to have a life of purpose, this is something she
thought she needed out of life, and she spent so much time doing perfecting her
life and those around her, that in the end, it was her downfall.
